Many of you have told me how challenging you would find it if you worked from home and I get it! There can be tons of distractions or you might feel like there’s not a great separation between your home and your 9-5 responsibilities.
A huge thing that has helped me is having a defined studio space. While it took me a few years to curate the perfect setting, I thought I’d help you speed up the process by sharing my Top 5 Must-Haves For Your Workspace. Before we dive in, let me paint the picture of what this room used to look like… My now dreamy office used to be a pink and gray striped girl’s bedroom! Kind of tacky, dark, and not too inspiring.
Thanks to a ton of help from my handy husband and family members, we transformed the space by adding shiplap, painting the walls, and then over the years I’ve added the perfect decor and furniture to round out the space. Today my workspace is a place I want to be. I feel inspired, relaxed, at ease, and free to dream up my next project.
Follow these tips as you create your go-to productivity spot!
1. Comfortable seating
I LOVE having a great armchair along with a supportive desk chair. Having two seating options allows me to move around and change things up throughout the day as well as providing a spot for someone else to sit when stopping by.
2. Coffee or tea stand
I’m fortunate to work from home so my kitchen is only a few steps away, however, I like having a coffee stand right within my workspace so I can brew a quick cup of coffee or drop a tea bag in a mug without having to interrupt my workflow by going downstairs. Mix and match your mugs or pick a fun color scheme that works with the whole space. Not only will you have an afternoon pick-me-up right at your fingertips but when it’s not in use, your coffee stand can serve as decor.
3. An attractive organizer
Is your desk full of papers, magazines, notes-to-self, birthday cards, and other items you don’t want to throw away but that are also clogging up your surface space? Then you need an organizer! My wall organizer helps me keep track of important items while also encouraging me to ditch the stuff I don’t need after a while. Rather than tucking things away into a drawer or filing cabinet where you likely won’t look for several years, keeping these things out in the open can help keep the clutter down.
4. Multiple lighting sources
My office comes with a ceiling light/fan but I don’t always want or need that much light especially if the sun is shining through the window, so I often use a small attractive desk lamp. It’s perfect for early mornings when I’m not quite ready for all the light and its also handy when I’m sketching or taking notes at my desk. Living in the midwest can make for some dull and dreary days, especially during the winter, so having two light sources allows me to dial things up or down as needed.
5. Personal Touches
Does your workspace feel like four walls, a floor, ceiling and that’s all? Then you might be missing those personal touches. For me, it’s family photos, floral accents, fun coasters, and a comfy throw blanket. These items make my space feel cozy, intentional, and inviting. I walk into my office and feel instantly welcome rather than uninspired and disconnected.
